Michael Apted's film about William Wilberforce, who dedicated his life to the fight against slavery, is not so much a biopic as a portrait of activism, an account of the long campaign that Wilberforce led in parliament, and that many others devoted their lives to. It combines earnestness with an entertaining directness and it has a fine ensemble cast. Ioan Gruffudd ( Hornblower) plays Wilberforce, Romola Garai is his wife Barbara, an ardent supporter of his work, and Benedict Cumberbatch (who, like Garai, can be seen in Atonement) is the young, ambitious politician William Pitt, who wants slavery abolished but is not prepared to risk his career in the cause, and so urges his friend Wilberforce to take up the struggle.
The actors bring a sense of conviction to the debate, no matter what side they are on and that's one of the strengths of the film: Rufus Sewell as the fervent radical; Ciaran Hinds as Wilberforce's antagonist in parliament; and Michael Gambon, as the experienced, cynical political operator whose defection to the cause is crucial.
